Attahiyatu is a special supplication in prayer. It is also known as Tashahude. The following sentences are to be recited in Tashahhud.

اَلتَّحِيَّاتُ لِلّٰهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ ۞ اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ اَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللّٰهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ ۞ اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلٰى عِبَادِ اللّٰهِ الصّٰلِحِيْنَ ۞ اَشْهَدُ اَنْ لَا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَ اَشْهَدُ اَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُوْلُهُ

Pronunciation: Attahiyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibatu. As-Salamu Alaika Ayyuhan-Nabiyu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. As-Salamu Alaina wa A’ala Ibadillahis-Saliheen. Ashhadu Allah Ilaha Illallahu wa Ashhadu Anna Muhammadan Abduhu wa Rasuluh.

Translation: All honor, all supplication and all holiness is due to Allah. O Prophet, peace, mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you. Peace be upon us and the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad (PBUH) is His servant and Messenger.

Durood Sharif: Meaning and Pronunciation

Durood Sharif is to invoke blessings and peace upon the beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). There are many sentences for reciting Durood Sharif, we present one version below.

اَللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلٰى اٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلٰى اِبْرٰهِيمَ وَعَلٰى اٰلِ اِبْرٰهِيمَ اِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَّجِيْدٌ ۞ اَللّٰهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلٰى اٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلٰى اِبْرٰهِيمَ وَعَلٰى اٰلِ اِبْرٰهِيمَ اِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَّجِيْدٌ

Pronunciation: Allahumma salli ala Muhammadin wa ala a’ali Muhammad, Kama sallaita ala Ibrahima wa ala a’ali Ibrahima innaka hamidum majid.

Allahumma barik ala muhammadin wa ala ali muhammad, kama barakata ala ibrahima wa ala ali ibrahima innaka hamidum majid

Translation: O Allah, bless Muhammad (pbuh) and his family, as You blessed Ibrahim (pbuh) and his family. Surely You are praised and glorified. O Allah, bless Muhammad (pbuh) and his family as You blessed Ibrahim (pbuh) and his family. Surely You are praised and glorified.

Hadith about Attahiyat lillahi wa salawatu

Narrated by Ibn Mas’ud (RA): The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “When one of you sits in prayer, he should say:

اَلتَّحِيَّاتُ لِلّٰهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ ۞ اَلَسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ اَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللّٰهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ ۞ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلٰى عِب َادِ اللّهِ الصّلِحِيْنَ ۞ اَشْهَدُ اَنْ لَا الِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّّهُ وَ اَشْهَدُ اَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُوْلُهُ

Then he can pray whatever he wants.” (Sahih Bukhari: 831)

Hadith about Durood Sharif

  • The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Whoever blesses me once, Allah will bless him ten times. (Muslim: 384)
  • The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “You will not turn my grave into a gathering place, and you pray over me; Because your blessings reach me, wherever you are. (Abu Dawud: 2044)
  • The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Whoever is mentioned before my name and then does not bless me, he is truly miserly. (Tirmidhi: 551)
  • The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “There is a group of traveling angels of Allah on earth who convey to me the salutations sent on behalf of the Ummah.” (Nasa’i: 1282)

How to recite Attahiyatu and Durood in Prayer

Attahiyatu after two rakats of every prayer and in the last sitting Attahiyat also Durood Sharif and other supplications are recited. Our attention should be reverently devoted to Allah while reciting these Duas.
