Can you pray fajr after sunrise? Hadith and the opinion of scholars

Shah Muhammad Suhail

If you ever wake up late for Fajr prayer — suppose you wake up 10 or 15 after sunrise, can you pray Fajr? Prayer is the foundation of Islam. Prayer is the life of Islam. The big difference between a believer and an unbeliever is prayer.

In addition to the five obligatory prayers, there is a provision of Nafal prayers in Islamic Shari’ah. It is important to have prayer time for prayer. So there are some times when praying is prohibited.

Importance of Fajr prayer at the right time

Fajr prayer is obligatory. It is a grave sin to perform any obligatory prayer intentionally or negligently. Therefore Fajr prayer should be performed as per time. Necessary measures should be taken to get up on time. For example, going to sleep earlier, telling someone to wake up, setting an alarm on the mobile phone, etc.

If someone cannot stay alert during Fajr despite keeping these arrangements or due to physical weakness, he should pray immediately after waking up. Then it will be considered as the time of Fajr for him. Even if the sun rises, it will not count as Qaza.

Rasulullah said, “Whoever forgets to pray or runs away because he is asleep, then his expiation is to pray immediately whenever he remembers.” (Muslim: Hadith 684).

So, after waking up, there is no delay. This opportunity will be valid till the day before two o’clock.

Can you pray fajr after sunrise?

Yes, you can pray fajr after sunrise. However, no prayer can be offered for 15-20 minutes after sunrise. Fajr prayer can be performed when the sun has fully risen. For at sunrise that is, until its yellow colour is well gone and the light is well diffused; It is forbidden to pray at this time.

Therefore, when the sunrise starts, delay Fajr by approximately 15-20 minutes. So no prayer can be offered inside during this time. After this time, Fajr will be recited as Qaza. In the Hadith Sharif, Uqba Bin Amer Juhani (R.A.) said: “There were three times when Rasulullah ﷺ forbade us to pray and bury the dead. Sunrise time; until it is completely elevated. From the time the sun is in the midheaven until it sets in the western sky. When the sun sets.’ (Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 1373)

Can you pray Fajr every day after sunrise?

No, you cannot make it a rule to pray Fajr every day after sunrise. Because the time fixed by Allah for the Fajr prayer is before sunrise. So you can’t delay it. The rule I mentioned above is that if suddenly one day someone can’t wake up on time then you have that break.

Otherwise, it is a sin to deliberately not offer prayers within the specified time. Because, Allah Ta’ala says, “So woe to those who pray, who are unaware of their prayer.” (Surah Ma’un, verses 4-5)

Abdullah Ibn Abbas (RA) said in the Tafseer of this verse, “Those who perform the prayer later than the appointed time….” (Tafseer Qurtubi: 20/211)

Importance of Fajr prayer in congregation

If you pray Fajr after sunrise, you will miss the congregation. But praying in the congregation is important. Fajr prayer is especially encouraged in congregations in the hadith. Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) said, ‘Whoever prays Isha in a congregation, it is as if he prayed half the night (Nafal). And the person who performed the Fajr prayer in congregation is as if he had prayed the whole night awake.”(Muslim, Hadith: 1377)

Fajr prayer time starts with the morning Sadiq. And it should be read before sunrise. In the morning, a long line of light can be seen in the eastern sky at the end of the night. After seeing it, one has to finish the Fajr prayer several minutes (20-22) before sunrise.

Praying before or after time

A person may know by performing Zuhr prayer that it was not Zuhr time at the time he prayed, but it was Asr time, but he does not have to perform Qaza a second time. The prayer that he has previously offered will be counted in the Qaza.

But if someone finds out after praying that he has prayed before the time is due, then that prayer will not be performed at all and must be prayed again. It is important to have time or time for prayer to be purified. Prayers will never be performed before the time.

When the sun rises while praying Fajr?

10-15 minutes of prayer cannot be offered during sunrise. However, if someone misses the Fajr prayer at this time, will his obligation be fulfilled? Or read that prayer again? Similarly, if someone starts praying before sunrise and the sun rises while praying, then many people want to know about the provisions of this prayer.

The opinion of Islamic law and jurisprudents in this regard is that it is forbidden to pray at sunrise. At this time, it is not valid to perform the obligatory Fajr prayer or any Qaza. If read, it will not be collected. So it should be taken care of later. Similarly, if the sun rises while praying after starting the prayer before sunrise, then this prayer must also be performed later.

How to pray Fajr if you don’t wake up?

If one cannot wake up from sleep or misses the Fajr prayer, it is obligatory to perform Qaza on him. Because the Messenger of Allah said, “Whoever forgets to pray or runs away because he is asleep, his expiation is to pray whenever he feels like it.” (Muslim, Hadith: 684)

However, it is a sin to deliberately not perform the prayer within the specified time. And making mistakes every day is not acceptable. Allah Ta’ala says, ‘So woe to those who pray, who are heedless of their prayers.’ (Surah Ma’un, verses 4-5)

Tafsirbid Abdullah Ibn Abbas (R.A.) said in the mentioned verse, that those prayers are said, by “those who perform prayers later than the appointed time.” (Tafsir Qurtubi, Volume: 20, Page: 211)
