Benefits of forgiveness prayer

The benefits of forgiveness prayer in Islam are immense. The Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, “Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His servant than the person whose camel, carrying food and drink, is suddenly lost in the deep desert.”

After much searching, the man fell under the shade of a tree in despair. Suddenly, he (opened his eyes from sleep) saw the camel standing near him. He took hold of the reins of the camel and began to exult in joy.

Oh God! You are my servant! And I am your Lord! He happily made such mistakes. (Bukhari, Hadith, 6309)

This is why the Qur’an and Sunnah have urged more and more repentance and asking for forgiveness. Because one of the ways to live a sin-free life is repentance and forgiveness. Allah Ta’ala declares:

وَمَن يَعْمَلْ سُوءًا أَوْ يَظْلِمْ نَفْسَهُ ثُمَّ يَسْتَغْفِرِ اللّهَ يَجِدِ اللّهَ غَفُورًا رَّحِيمًا

‘Whoever commits a sin or wrongs himself, then asks for forgiveness from Allah, he finds Allah Forgiving, Merciful.’ (Surah Nisa: verse 110)

‘Surely the hypocrites will be in the lowest level of Hell, and you will never find a helper for them. But those who repent and reform are excepted.’ (Surah Nisa: Verses 145-146)

In another verse, he says,

O believers! Return to Allah, all of you, so you may succeed.’ (Surah Noor: Verse 31)

Why should we pray for forgiveness?

We will pray for forgiveness for our sins because only humans fall prey to mistakes. Only humans fall prey to mistakes. Sins are broken. The truth is that man is created with the power of sin and virtue. It is stated in the Qur’an, “Allah has awakened within man the impulse for both evil and good deeds.” [Shams: 8]

So sin will be revealed by us. This is not unusual. A hadith also understands that if our sin is not revealed, Allah will destroy us and create another nation.

Abu Huraira RA. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, say, “By the One in Whose Hand is my life, if you do not sin at all, then Allah will destroy you and create a people who will sin and seek forgiveness.” will do Then Allah will forgive them.’ [Muslim, Hadith: 2749)

This hadith indicates that if human beings could not sin, then there would be no need for human creation. Angels alone were sufficient for worship.
