The Qur’an can be read at any time of the day or night, but from various hadiths, there is an urge to read certain surahs after five daily prayers. And since the time of fajr is especially blessed, many brothers and friends ask – what surah to read after fajr?
The Qur’an is an integral part of a believer’s life. He will recite the Qur’an whenever he gets a chance day and night. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ‘Jealousy cannot be done with anyone except two people.
One. The person whom Allah has taught the Qur’an and recites it day and night. And hearing that his neighbours say, Alas! If we had been given such knowledge as so-and-so had been given, we would have acted like him.
Two. That person, to whom Allah has given wealth spends that wealth in the way of truth and justice. Seeing this situation, another person said, Alas! Had I been given the wealth of such a person, I would have spent as he spends.’ (Bukhari, Hadith: 5026)
What surah to read after fajr?
Surah Yasin can be read after Fajr. However, it is not Sunnah or Wajib to recite it every day after Fajr. Because there is no specific hadith about reading a specific surah after Fajr.
However, there is a Sahih hadith about saying Fajr prayer in congregation and sitting till sunrise. And Quran recitation is the best Dhikr. So read the Qur’an at this time.
A hadith has been narrated on the authority of Tabayi Ata (RA) (Mursalan). The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever recites Surah Yaseen at the beginning of the day, his needs for that day will be fulfilled.” (Sunan Daremi)
It should be noted that the hadith scholars call the narration of this hadith weak. However, there is no difficulty in acting on such hadiths. But it should be remembered that reading Surah Yasin after Fajr cannot be made a daily routine.
Which surah is more beneficial to read after Fajr?
There are some benefits of reciting Surah Yaseen after Fajr. But Quran recitation is the best dhikr and Surah Yasin is the soul of Quran. So if the day is started with Surah Yasin then it will surely be blessed.
The most beneficial way for you is to recite the Dua Zikir Tasbeeh etc. prescribed by the Sunnah after the Fajr prayer. And the most beneficial Zikir after Fajr is Syedul Istegfar. Moreover, personal prayers can also be done at this time.
Scholars’ opinion
Some past scholars have opined that reciting Surah Yaseen after Fajr has some benefits. But remember this is just their personal opinion. Neither the Quran nor the Hadith specifically prescribes any surah to be recited after Fajr.
The eminent Tabi’i Yahya Ibn Qasir said,
من قرأ ” يس ” إذا أصبح لم يزل في فرح حتى يمسي ، ومن قرأها إذا أمسى لم يزل في فرح حتى يصبح . قال : وأنبأنا مَن جرَّبَ ذلك
A person who recites Surah Yasin in the morning will be happy till evening. One who recites in the evening will be at peace till morning. He also said I was told about this matter by a person who has experience with it. (Narrated by Ibn Jurays, Fazael al-Qur’an, narration no. 218 page 101)
Is there any evidence of reciting a Surah after Fajr?
No, there is no hadith that clearly mentions reciting a specific surah after Fajr. However, in the hadith, the Prophet ﷺ said,
A person who prays Fajr with congregation. Then sit till sunrise and remember Allah. Then pray two rakats. That person gets the reward of one Hajj and one Umrah. Full, full, full. (Tirmidhi 586)
For this reason, it is necessary to recite any surah or verse of the Qur’an as per one’s wish without reciting any specific surah after Fajr. At the same time, being busy in zikr and dua.
